Noshville
I went to Noshville looking for an alternative to pancakes in Nashville. Don’t get me wrong – I like eating them at the much-loved Pancake Pantry. But it’s way overrated. The food is good, but often the long wait, exacerbated by tourists who linger too long over their food, leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It’s hard for locals like myself to get in just to eat and go. My personal belief is that there needs to be a “locals-only” day whereby you have to show a local ID to get in. But that’s a story for another time.
Anyhow, I went to Noshville on a Monday morning, around 10:15am. Seating was immediate, and the waitress was helpful with menu choices. I wanted pancakes, but I also wanted to try something else with them. My waitress recommended I try the knish, which is a mix between a potato pancake and savory baklava. She also suggested I get just one pancake (griddle cake, as they’re called on Noshville’s menu) as they come quite large.
Both items were superb. The griddle cake was a bit crustier and dense than those found at Pancake Pantry, and the knish was very flavorful. It comes wrapped in a thin crust, and inside the potatoes are soft. You can taste the garlic, as well as pepper – this item packs a little heat.
If you want a wide variety of pancakes to choose from and don’t mind a crowd of tourists to interrupt your eating, go for Pancake Pantry. If you want just regular, good pancakes without the hype, go to Noshville.

Don’t go for the corned beef hash. It was a serious disappointment; bland, under-salted, and lacking the small diced potatoes that really help the dish.
The silver-dollar potato pancakes were, however, delightful.
