The Skinny on Fat Mo’s

Don’t be fooled by the jolly round bellied American caricature on the logo! Fat Mo’s is named after Mohammad Karimy, an Iranian immigrant who started the superb burger joint in the early 90′s. The restaurant has expanded across the region and has even added a Kentucky location. The offerings are simple with lots of burgers, fries, onion rings, and ice cream. Regardless, it’s really all about the burgers and it’s an insult to yourself if you order anything in place of one.

I’ve enjoyed Fat Mo’s to go twice now (on the rare occasions I want a hamburger) and I’m hooked. It seems there isn’t much pre-preparation since you’ll always have to wait a little while for a drive through meal. The star of the menu is the Fat Mo’s Deluxe Burger which has all the traditional toppings and is finished with grilled onions, mushrooms, thick cut bacon, barbeque sauce, and jalapeños. Add some spicy fries and this $9 meal is plenty to split with a friend. If you’re up for a challenge (and a myocardial infarction), try the super deluxe burger which boasts “OVER 27 oz.” of freshly seasoned ground beef.

I have yet to decide about the source of the fries. My guess is that they are simply high quality food service. Yet, they’re served up hot & delicious in excessive portions, and you’ll always get ketchup offered on to go orders.

The only con for me is that the menu is really one-dimensional – no vegetarian options appear on the menu so you’ll have to visit another Nashville staple, Cheeseburger Charley’s (which deserves its own entry soon), for more variety.

The bottom line: Fat Mo’s wins a badge in two categories: (1) best fresh & quick burger to go (2) best American meals prepared by an Iranian chain. If someone can beat number 2, you must let me know.
