Vanderbilt Deli

The Vanderbilt Deli is overlooked as a great lunch stop and I want to remedy this. You won’t find it on any Google search of restaurants in Nashville. Most likely part of the problem is that its location is not clearly visible from the street. To get there, turn left or right (depending upon which direction you’re going) from 21st Avenue South at the sign for the East Garage. You should see the Barber Shop directly in front of you. There’s 30 minute parking in this area. Grab a spot and then walk to your left and around the building. The Vanderbilt Deli is located at the last door on the right.

As you enter, you’ll see a no-nonsense, no-frills deli. Look up at the menu board; you’ll see the every day items, along with some specials of the day. To your right is a cooler with all sorts of bottled drinks. To your left is a display of chips. Line up at the cooler in front of you and place your order.

Everything here is quite good and quite a deal. My favorite is the 12 oz of chili – a steal at $3. It comes with a square of sweet cornbread. It will come to you packaged perfectly with fork, knife, two pats of butter, the cornbread, and the chili, all in a brown paper bag – easy to transport. Other good items are the barbecue sandwich and pretty much any soup of the day. You can eat in the deli at the little bar that faces the front windows, but most people order for takeout. Also be sure to pick up one of the homemade sweets laid out temptingly on a tray.

It’s important to time your visit carefully, as the deli gets a lot of business from Vanderbilt workers on their lunch break. Try to go between the hour and half hour for quickest results.

Take note – the deli takes only cash and check.
