Savannah Tea Company
Savannah Tea Company is a quaint little place on 8th Ave S, just south of the intersection with Wedgewood Avenue. They serve over one hundred types of tea, along with typical ladies-who-lunch fare such as chicken salad sandwiches. A highlight of the menu is their “light afternoon” tea ($24.50, which includes tax and gratuity) and “high afternoon” tea (around $30 with tax and gratuity). The basic difference between the two services is that the high afternoon tea includes a savory tart and cup of soup.
My friends and I made a reservation for light afternoon tea, as suggested on the website. The lady with whom we spoke reminded us over and over again to please be sure to cancel 24 hours in advance if needed. We enjoyed our tea time greatly. There are so many teas to choose from that it’s difficult to make a decision. Our foodstuffs included chicken salad-filled phyllo cups, cream cheese sandwiches, tiny carrot cakes, fresh fruit, chocolate-covered strawberries, and sorbet. Everything was very fresh.
My only axe to grind with the restaurant was the pricing. I feel that the pricing was a little high for all that was and was not included. Additionally, the store includes gratuity on your bill. I feel that gratuity should reflect the nature of the service, and the diner should have the option to choose the amount.
Tea houses aren’t for everyone, to be sure. But a visit for a more formal tea event can be very relaxing, and we enjoyed our time there. We’ll most likely go back, but will order a la carte.
