Green Hills Grille

Update 5/3/2009: This restaurant is closed.

While the Green Hills Grille may be technically called part of a chain, it started out as a local business, so we decided to try it out while in the area and include it on our reviews here. We were fairly disappointed, and will split our review into three sections.

Food: We started our meal with the coconut chicken tenders. These were delicious: fresh and piping hot from the kitchen, accompanied by a sweet honey mustard sauce that even my husband, who usually likes nothing but ranch on chicken fingers, gobbled up. I ordered the soup and salad combination, which includes a green salad and choice of either the house tortilla soup or the soup of the day. I chose the lemon shallot vinaigrette to go with my salad, and truth be told, it was awful. It tasted metallic and I couldn’t eat past two bites. The fairly famous tortilla soup was quite good, however. For my drink I had the fruit tea, which was too heavy on pineapple juice.

My husband had the grilled portobello sandwich, which he loved. The sandwich was generously sized and came with fresh french fries. He appreciated the generous glass of milk that arrived with his entree, just as requested.

Service: Unfortunately, the service at the restaurant will probably keep me from ever returning. We arrived well before the lunch rush, and requested a table for two. The hostess immediately looked us up and down and made a sour face. This happened again as another host escorted us to our table. I’m not sure what was up with this. Looking around at the other clientele in the restaurant made it evident that they cater mainly to business lunchers and “ladies who lunch,” and they even welcome gaggles of prep school girls. But it was fairly obvious that two casual lunchers were perhaps not as welcome.

Value: Our meal cost a total of $40 for two, and I was underwhelmed. Also take note that one of our suggestions for eating well for less money, that of dining at lunch time, does not apply to Green Hills Grille; their lunch menu prices are the same as that of the dinner menu. My advice is to take $15 and head across Hillsboro Road to Kalamata’s, where you’ll always receive fresh, well-prepared food from staff who welcome your business.

Yeah I have to agree with you. This GHG in this location seems like it will never be quite right, to say the least. The salads these days seem lack luster at best. Customer service has totally gone down the tubes ever since the former general manager (now owner of 215) left GHG a few years ago. When he was there, GHG was excellent in service, timeliness, and the customer is queen or king. I used to love GHG, but in the past 4 years it has left my food radar.

I’m sorry you didn’t like GHG, Heather. Its one of my favorite places in Nashville to eat and I always stop there when shopping at Green Hills. Tortilla soup and fruit tea are two of my favorite foods and I really like their club sandwich (although, I don’t see it on the menu online :( ).

Although, I can’t recall when I dined there last, so if the previous commenter is correct then perhaps it has been downhill since my last visit. That would be a shame.
